Translation
The Translator's Role
As a translator, my role is multifaceted. It involves understanding the depth of the source material, grasping its nuances, and then carefully reconstructing its meaning in another language. Translation is not a word-for-word substitution; it's about conveying the same message, tone, and essence of the original text. The end goal is to produce a translation that reads as if it were originally written in the target language.
Translation Tools and Technology
Modern translators harness various tools and technologies to enhance their work:
CAT Tools: Computer-assisted translation software, like Trados, Phrase, MemoQ, Across, and many others, helps to maintain consistency across large projects.
Termbases: Ensuring technical terms are translated correctly and consistently.
Machine Translation Post-Editing: Combining AI-powered translations with human expertise to produce accurate translations more efficiently.
5 Steps in My Translation Workflow
Preparative work
I thoroughly review instructions, glossaries, and style guides (if any).
I read the file(s) to understand the goal and particularities of the document(s).
I familiarize myself with the document's context online, including reviewing information about events related to and searching for bilingual documents (if any).
2. Translation
I refer to the translation memory and terminology database.
I conduct a thorough search and research of terminology online if needed.
In case of ambiguities, I consult the Client.
I mark typos and inaccuracies in the source text (if any) in comments or in a separate email to the Client.
3. Quality assurance after translation completion
I check spelling and inconsistencies using standard CAT tool features.
I use Xbench for quality assurance for large files.
I review the final translation to ensure fluency and eliminate errors.
I perform a double-check to ensure terminology consistency.
4. Target file preparation
This step is to be done if required by the Client:
I carefully review the target file, including its structure and formatting.
5. Delivery
I submit the translation to the Client always on time.
Please note that this methodology is a framework that could vary depending on the Client’s request.
